Area of a Triangle

Half the rectangle that boxes it in.

A triangle is exactly half of the rectangle that boxes it in

Read the full lesson →

A rectangle 6 across and 4 up holds 24 squares.

Put the top corner anywhere along the top edge — any triangle, not a neat one.

Drop a line from that corner. Now there are two rectangles, one either side.

84424½ × 4 × 4 + ½ × 2 × 4 = 8 + 4 = 12½ × 6 × 4 = ½ × 24 = 12

It cuts each one corner to corner, taking half of each: half of 24 is 12.

Now you

224

A triangle with base 22 and height 4. What is its area?

64

A triangle with base 6 and height 4. What is its area?

Area of a Parallelogram

Slide the slanted end and it is a rectangle.

Slide the slanted end across and a parallelogram becomes a rectangle

47

Cut off the slanted triangle at the dashed line and slide it to the other end.

47same area, new shape

It leaves a gap at one end and fills the matching gap at the other.

74

Now it is a rectangle of area 7 × 4 = 28.

hb

Area of a parallelogram = b × h.

Now you

211

A parallelogram with base 11 and height 2. What is its area?

77

A parallelogram with base 7 and height 7. What is its area?

Area of a Trapezium

Average the parallel sides, times the height.

A trapezium behaves like a rectangle whose width is the average of its parallel sides

6410

A trapezium has two parallel sides, and they are different lengths.

48the long 10 lends to the short 6

Swing the two bottom corners up into the gaps on top. Nothing is added or lost.

84

The 10 and the 6 have met at 8, so the area is that rectangle: 8 × 4 = 32.

ahb

Area of a trapezium = 1/2 × (a + b) × h.

Now you

7711

A trapezium with parallel sides 7 and 11, height 7. What is its area?

5315

A trapezium with parallel sides 5 and 15, height 3. What is its area?

Area of a Composite Figure

Split it up, or subtract the gap.

Split the figure into shapes with formulas, or subtract the piece that is missing

7 by 5, corner 3 by 2

A floor 7 m by 5 m with a 3 by 2 corner missing. Two ways to find what is left.

35 − 6 = 29

Subtract: the full floor is 7 × 5 = 35, the corner 3 × 2 = 6, so 35 − 6 = 29 m².

Or split: a 7 × 3 strip below and a 4 × 2 block above — 21 + 8 = 29 again.

Now you

A wall 8 by 3 under a roof triangle, base 8 height 2. Area?

9 by 5, corner 2 by 2

A floor 9 m by 5 m, minus a 2 by 2 corner. Area?
