Subtract from 1000
No borrowing: take each digit from 9 — last one from 10.
1000 - 473 = 527
1000 is 999 + 1. Take the 473 from 999 instead — no zero has to lend.
Every digit of 999 is big enough: 9−4=5, 9−7=2, 9−3=6. No borrowing anywhere.
Give the 1 back to the units: 6 + 1 = 7. So each digit came from 9, the last from 10.
