10 cm012345678910cm

This ruler is 10 cm long, and ten of them make 100 cm — that is 1 meter.

025050075010001 km

Kilo means a thousand: 1000 m = 1 km.

Now you

01500300045006000

How many meters in 6 km?

0100200300400

How many centimeters in 4 m?

Converting Lengths

Same length, smaller unit, bigger number.

A length never changes when you change its unit — only the number counting it does

3 m01234m

Here is a length: 3 meters.

same length01234m

Now measure the very same length with a smaller unit.

3 m × 100
300 cmbecause 1 m IS 100 cm

3 m is 3 × 100 = 300 cm.

in meters1 mm0.0011 cm0.011 m11 km1000

Each unit is worth a fixed amount. Look it up, then multiply.

Now you

120 cmwhat does this come to?

120 cm in meters and centimeters?

410 cmwhat does this come to?

410 cm in meters and centimeters?

Converting Units of Area

The square catches both factors.

An area converts once for each direction, so the length factor gets squared

1 m1 m1 dm² = 10 × 10 = 100 cm²1 m² = 100 × 100 = 10000 cm²

A meter is 100 cm, so a 1 m square is 100 cm by 100 cm: 10,000 cm², not 100.

1 mlengths take the factor once1 m = 100 cmareas take it twice
cm²

An area converts once for each of its two directions.

1 cm = 10 mm1 cm² = 10 × 10 = 100 mm²

The same square catches every pair: 1 cm² is 10 mm by 10 mm — 100 mm².

1 m = 100 cmvolume runs three directions
cm³

A volume converts three times over: 1 m³ = 1,000,000 cm³.

Now you

what does this come to?

9 m² in cm²

7 cm²what does this come to?

7 cm² in mm²

Grams and Kilograms

A thousand grams sit inside every kilogram.

1 kg1000 g

The scale does not move: 1 kg = 1000 g, the same weight twice.

1 kg 500 g1500 g

So 1 kg 500 g = 1500 g: the kilogram becomes 1000 g and the 500 joins it.

Now you

1 kg 700 gwhat does this come to?

1 kg 700 g in grams?

3300 gwhat does this come to?

3300 g in kilograms and grams?

Milliliters and Liters

Full to the top reads 1 L on the left and 1000 mL on the right.

00.250.50.751L02505007501000mLthe same level, read twice

Pour some out. The level is a quarter: 0.25 L on the left, 250 mL on the right.

Now you

00.51L

How many milliliters in 3 L?

00.51L

How many milliliters in 1 L?

5 gaps share 100, so each gap is worth 20. The arrow sits 3 gaps along, at 60.

020406080100

3 small marks cut the 20 gap into 4 steps of 5, and the arrow sits 2 past 40: 50.

0100200300400500g

100 / 4 = 25 a step, so 2 steps past 200 reads 250 g.

Now you

020406080100

What does the arrow show?

20 minutes reach 4:00pm, then 10 minutes more: 20 + 10 = 30.

Now you

≈ 15 cm

A pencil is about 15 centimeters. Not meters — a 15 m pencil would cross the road.

≈ 150 g

An apple weighs about 150 g. Not kilograms — a 150 kg apple outweighs two adults.

Now you

≈ ?
